How to Get a Paper that You Find In PubMed
Question : What do you do when you find a paper in PubMed that you want to see but you do not have online access to it?
Answer : You order it while in PubMed and the Whitehead Librarian, Dave Richardson, will deliver it to you. Of course if it is more convenient, simply email requests directly to the librarian.
Let's consider an example. I am looking for recent work on microRNAs. I come across this paper in PubMed :

I would like to read this paper but I quickly ascertain that we do not have either online or physical access to it at the WI. As you can see in the illustration above, I have already started the ordering process by checking the box to the left of the authors' names and by pulling down the Send to menu and changing it to Order. PubMed replies with the LoansomeDoc initial screen :

This is prompting me for the email address and the password that I have registered with PubMed (see Registering for LoansomeDoc below). Entering that information and selecting Login brings me to :

Selecting Proceed to Delivery Options at the bottom gets me to :

Checking the Copyright Compliance statement and selecting Continue takes me to :

Selecting Send Order at this point completes the ordering process. My order is confirmed and I am prompted as to what I want to do next :

You are not limited to ordering one paper at a time. In searching PubMed, put check marks next to all of the papers that you are interested in that are not available at the WI, then change the Send to button at the top to Order. If you do several separate searches in PubMed, you must use the Add to Clipboard button to save the papers that you have checked from the different searches. When you go to order the papers, select Clipboard at the top of the screen between History and Details to get a list of all of the papers that you have checked from the various searches. Then order them. Remember that the WI Library has a policy of only getting 5 papers per week per researcher. Research assistants (MIT graduate students) should also note that the WI Library will only get papers for you that are not at the WI or MIT.
To begin select Sign Up at the bottom of the initial LoansomeDoc screen:

This will bring you to :

where you select Get Started to go to :

Here you must change the state to Massachusetts and uncheck Show only libraries that serve the general public as in the illustration above. Select Search for Libraries to get to the next step :
:

Here you must go to the last page of the list to find the Whitehead Library :

. Clicking on Select to the left of Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research takes you to :

Here select the top button in the User Identification section as in the illustration above i.e., I am affiliated with this institution (e.g., Staff, Student). Then select Continue :

Check off the box I have read and understand the LoansomeDoc policies and procedures of my ordering library as in the illustration above. Then select Accept :

This is where you register for LonesomeDoc by entering your email address (which must be a WI address to use the WI document delivery service) and by creating a password. Then enter your personal information in the boxes with the asterisks. At the bottom of the registration screen you will see :

Here change the Delivery Method to Mail as in the illustration above. Select Continue to review what you have entered :

If the information is correct, select Complete Registration :

You have completed the registration and all of your information is displayed. Armed with your new password, you are now ready to order the documents that you find in PubMed. Go to PubMed.
