There are two ways to import PubMed records into EndNote. The easiest method is to use the connect feature of EndNote. Connection files contain all of the information necessary for EndNote to open and search PubMed and to directly import references into an EndNote library. The only drawback of this approach is that one is limited to the search engine provided by EndNote. See this for an explanation of how to configure Endnote to take advantage of this method. Described below is the second, more traditional way to import PubMed records into Endnote libraries using the more robust PubMed search engine.
Adding PubMed records to EndNote libraries is quite simple if you observe a few rules. Rule number one is to make sure that the PubMed records are in the appropriate format to be imported into EndNote. Let's consider a typical scenario in which a researcher is looking for work that links E2F and P107. A search of PubMed on 9 August 2007 using the Firefox web browser yields 368 papers with the most recent paper first :

To get the right format for importing into EndNote, the Display setting has to be changed from Summary to Medline. This is accomplished by clicking the black triangle to the right of the white Display window and selecting Medline. This is also a good time to change the Show default value of 20 to the maximum value of 500, since the search above yielded 364 papers. The results window will now look something like this :

As soon as you make these changes, the 364 records change to Medline format :

Now that the records are in Medline format, you need to export them to your computer. To do this, change the Send to button to File :

Once File is selected, a window opens up asking you what you want to do with the file being sent to you :

Selecting Save to Disk and OK opens another window :

that alerts you to the fact that the 368 PubMed records have been downloaded to your computer in a file named "pubmed-result.txt". The final step is to import "pubmed-result.txt" into EndNote. To accomplish this, you must configure the EndNote software to have access to the right filter to import PubMed records. If you pull down the EndNote Edit menu and selectImport Filters, you can then select Open Filter Manager. A long list of filters opens up :

Scroll through the alphabetical list to PubMed (NLM) and select the box on the left under Favorites. This will insure that the PubMed filter is always an option when you go to import records. You are now ready to import PubMed records. The process is illustrated below using EndNote X. If you pull down the File menu in EndNote and select Import, the following window opens up :

Note that Import Options reads PubMed(NLM).enf. If that is not the filter name that appears next to Import Options, simply click on the two triangles on the right and selectPubMed (NLM).enf from the list of filters that does appear. Also note that "pubmed-result.txt" has been selected. If you select Import now, voila! In this case, all 361 PubMed records are imported into your EndNote library.
