Joining Our Lab
last updated 11/20/09

Diversity enhances creativity. We are committed to diversity and welcome applications from scientists with many different backgrounds and lifestyles. Current lab members have training in subjects as diverse as Computer Science, Chemical Engineering, Protein Biochemistry, Population Genetics, Pediatric Oncology and Neurology. They hail from many different cultural backgrounds and countries. In the current financial environment, we do take into account fellowship eligibility. But that is generally not a determining factor.

Ours is a laboratory culture that values the interplay of collaboration and individual achievement. We seek scientists with a generous spirit, who enjoy discussing their newest findings, sharing ideas, reagents and expertise, and who have a desire to tackle fundamental problems. These are determining factors.

Postdocs

The Whitehead Institute has long been an extraordinary place to do cutting-edge biomedical research. It is now also at the forefront of increasing salaries and benefits to postdoctoral fellows and associates.

Postdoctoral fellows in the laboratory generally secure independent funding through grants and fellowships. Some fellowships and grants held by current lab members and recent alumni include:

The lab is currently full and we cannot accept new postdocs for about a year. However, we are happy to consider postdoc applications for a Fall 2010 start date. If you would like to apply please arrange for a cover letter, your CV, and three letters of reference (electronic mail is preferred) to be sent to Brooke Bevis at bevis@wi.mit.edu.

We also accept postdocs to work collaboratively between our lab and others at MIT. We are currently looking for a systems or computational biology or postdoc to work in collaboration with Dr. Ernest Fraenkel to analyze the role of the transcriptional regulator HSF1 in cancer. Please see the Fraenkel lab site for details.

Graduate Students

Graduate students enter our lab via one of the academic units of MIT, for example:

If you apply and are selected for a visit to MIT, please let us know if you are particularly interested in our lab. Sue goes to many grad student recruitment events but can't make all of them. But she would be happy to try to coordinate your visit with her schedule.

Undergraduates

  • MIT UROPS: Information about proposals and deadlines for MIT undergraduate research opportunities (UROPs) is available from the UROP website. Ideally we expect a long-term commitment to a research project, two academic years and a summer. UROPs will start out receiving credit for the first term and pay thereafter if the project works out and both sides wish to continue.
  • Summer students may also apply through the MIT Summer Research Program. Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents. African-American, Mexican-American, Native-American, and Puerto Rican students are especially encouraged to apply.

If you apply as a UROP or summer student, please contact Brooke Bevis (bevis@wi.mit.edu) with CV and research interests.

We regret that we are unable to accept undergraduate or graduate students that do not apply through MIT or a partner school program.

**Please note: if you don't hear back from us it is likely because we haven't received a reference letter (advisor's letters are particularly important). Every now and then someone is travelling or there is some other snafu. If you haven't heard from us within two weeks of your letters being sent, please contact Brooke Bevis directly or lindquist_admin@wi.mit.edu in an emergency.
